A Dotty Tote is Born

Creating the Just Dotty line of tote bags really is a bit like giving birth. There is a good deal of labor, it takes a long time, and there is usually some discomfort along the way. But, when that "baby" is born, it is all worth it! We start out with some ideas of colors we'd like to find, and we begin to roam the aisles.

As we both gather swatches, we compare our finds and begin to whittle them down. Often, we spend quite a bit of time trying to convince the other that our swatch is the best. Our ironclad rule is that if we don't both agree, we keep looking.

Once we have narrowed our choices down, we start to look in earnest for the next piece of the puzzle. Since we don't have a set order on what we choose, we may have a fabulous lining that needs an exterior, or even a trim that begs for the perfect fabric. We have several favorite sources, and we visit them all, usually over a number of days. We haul bolts of fabric out into the parking lot to check colors, hold trim samples up for inspection, and generally camp out at our various haunts until we are completely satisfied that each look is perfect and unique.

Once the fabrics are cut and loaded up, we head to our manufacturer. We have won him over to our rather haphazard and enthusiastic delivery style, and he enjoys seeing our creations come to life almost as much as we do. On the way home, we begin naming each tote. After all, they are our babies.
